The Maleeva Tennis Club is named after Manuela, Katerina, and Magdalena Maleeva—three sisters who changed Bulgarian sport forever. Together with their mother, the legendary coach Julia Berberyan, and with the support of their father, Georgi Maleev, they are the most successful tennis family in Bulgaria’s history and the only one in the world where three sisters reached the global elite. In the golden years of tennis—the 80s and 90s, when the sport was dominated by the great powers—three Bulgarian women made it to the top. Manuela reached No. 3, Katerina No. 6, and Magdalena No. 4 in the world rankings.

If success were merely a matter of talent, perhaps this story would be different. But here, the key words are work, perseverance, and discipline. Julia Berberyan not only trained her daughters but prepared them for the battles on the court. As a competitor, she was a multiple-time Bulgarian national tennis champion, but as a coach, she left an even deeper mark on the sport.

Manuela was the first to break into the global elite. She reached number 3 in the world rankings and won 19 singles titles on the WTA tour. Her best results in Grand Slam tournaments include the quarterfinals of the US Open, Roland Garros, and the Australian Open, as well as a bronze medal at the Seoul Olympics. Following her, Katerina also achieved top success with 11 titles in her career. The youngest sister, Magdalena, also had an impressive career, reaching No. 4 in the world rankings in August 1995, with victories over legends like Martina Navratilova and Venus Williams. Maggie won 10 WTA tournament titles and retired from professional tennis in 2005, marking the end of the Maleevas’ 25-year presence in the elite of world tennis.
Today, the Maleeva Tennis Club continues these extraordinary successes. At Maleeva, new generations of tennis players hit their first balls and, without realizing it, start following in the footsteps of history. A history that began with a mother, a father, and three girls who did not take “no” for an answer and proved that with perseverance and dedication, even a small country like Bulgaria can produce world-class champions.
